Nueva tierra suban, proyecto de Internet ecológico (IE)
Contacto: Dr. Glen Barry, Presidente, Internet ecológico glenbarry@ecologicalinternet.org

Partidarios EI estimados,
Dr. Glen Barry

October 12, 2010 ALERT! Demand Upcoming Global Biodiversity Meeting Ban Geoengineering
By Ecological Internet's Climate Ark Climate Change Portal
TAKE ACTION HERE NOW!
Geoengineering [search] is the proposed large scale manipulation of Earth?s oceans, soils and atmosphere with the intent of combating climate change. Modifying Earth at a planetary scale is so complex, and ecological and other side effects potentially so severe, that clearly humanity is incapable of safely engineering a biosphere [search]. Will a "Frankensphere" be constructed with dramatic unknown consequences to biodiversity and ecosystems, or will we choose to equitably reduce emissions, consumption and population? Next week?s Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10) meeting in Japan must pass a moratorium on live geoengineering testing. Failure will mean continued implementation of ecosystem destroying technologies ? precisely what has gotten us into our current climate dilemma.
Posted by Dr. Glen Barry on October 12, 2010 5:16 AM | More on geoengineer campaign CommentsDear Glen Barry, Randy and Friends,
We are fiddlin' while the Earth begins to burn, are we not?
Your words remind to mention a quote of Oliver Cromwell, which I would like to direct to the main actors in the misguided effort to Geoengineer the Earth and its environs: "I beseech you, in the bowels of Christ, think it possible you may be mistaken."
Gary, every time a friend like you has shown me a new example of what our finest ancestors could see that would be occurring in our time, I am reminded of the remarkable number of splendid people throughout our history who raised their voices loudly? who tried to let us know as you do now. Of course, as great human beings with feet of clay have known all too well, the powers that be, the self-proclaimed masters of the universe today would complete the work of the greedy kings who came before them. Ancient kings (named by Ozymandias) have set the stage for the final act in a play presented by ideological idiots, unless, of course, we choose a different way f i n a l l y - - - b e f o r e i t i s t o o l a t e.
Sincerely,
Steve
Dear Dr. Glen Barry -
I believe you are making the most profound mistake of your career in taking this carte blanche anti-geoengineering stance! Are you really against white roofs? Biochar? Some geoengineering could, locally, be harmful, unquestionably. But almost all the best climatologists quietly agree now that emissions controls alone won't be enough to avoid runaway tipping points, at least for a couple of decades in the middle of this century.
You are either less of a hard-headed realist than I thought, or simply have not studied the RF figures very carefully, and projected impacts of those figures. Do you want to create a legal blockade against saving civilization? So-called SRM (both sulfur-based aerosols and cloud brightening) could have strong negative effects, but it deals with very short residency times, so even that could always be stopped very quickly if/when strong side effects started to occur. Ocean seeding is the most controversial, but even there, the very small scale of the tests done so far are not at all significant globally and have been quite educational (mostly in showing that the idea doesn't work nearly so easily as assumed - which is a good thing to know and demonstrates the positive value of such research, as it helps prevent desperate, ill-conceived, and untested measures in the future when things get worse) . As for the "Frankensphere" metaphor, frankly, that's exactly where we're headed right now, and while poorly conceived geoengineering could be as bad as nothing, with research, and used as a complement to emissions reductions, not a replacement of them, it could be a most vital element in saving everything you want to save. Your mistake here is immense in its implications!
I agree with the previous comment.Humans will continue to have a huge impact on this planet. It is time for us to develop the tools and wisdom to manage the biosphere. The word "geoengineer" may evoke an image of human arrogance, but
it may also evoke an attitude of human responsibility for the health of our planet.
Perhaps. But would you not grant the precautionary principle is warranted and hold back on live test until an international consensus, protocols and scientific basis agreed? To not do so is reckless beyond belief.
Dr. Glen Barry
One of the alert targets is forwarding around an email suggesting geoengineering isn't even on the agenda of CBD. It is:
Yes, geoengineering is on the agenda of the COP. The language from SBSTTA is bracketed. The 14th session of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-14) has put fo...rward to COP 10 a draft decision pertaining to geoengineering (see UNEP/CBD/COP/10/1/Add.2/Rev.1, pp. 145-147) under ?Climate Change and Biodiversity? (Agenda item 5.6), which contains the following passages:
1 (d) The Conference of the Parties?Implement activities to increase the adaptive capacity of species and the resilience of ecosystems in the face of climate change, including, inter alia?
[(w) Ensure, in line and consistent with decision IX/16 C, on ocean fertilization and biodiversity and climate change, and in accordance with the precautionary approach, that no climate-related geoengineering activities take place until there is an adequate scientific basis on which to justify such activities and appropriate consideration of the associated risks for the environment and biodiversity and associated social, economic and cultural impacts;][1]
9. Requests the Executive Secretary to: ?
(n) Compile and synthesize available scientific information on the possible impacts of geoengineering techniques on biodiversity and make it available for consideration at a meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice prior to the eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties;[2]
Hi @Karolina - some points to keep in mind re: Mr. Sharman's email response:
1.) In the past CBD COPs have in fact made statements on geoengineering including against unregulated ocean manipulations. We are asking them to do so again.
2.) The... CBD's own technical staff did in fact recommend the importance of the issue - and placing a moratorium on geoengineering - being on the agenda, and they could bow to pressure and put it there at any time. This is referred to in the protest email, and the links on more information provides extensive information on the matter of CBD refusing to followi their own technical staff and put the matter on the agend.
3.) The protest emails are going to all global CBD National Focal Points - many of which will in fact be attending the meeting, but all of whom are listed as official government contacts for CBD business.
With these understandings, in fact the response from a CBD focal point for the European Union a remarkable and interesting read. Yes, there are real people at the end of the send button!
Please be aware the message is going to several hundred recipients - including all National Focal Point Contacts for the Convention on Biological Diversity. Thus, you will receive some email responses including out of office messages as many are traveling to Japan for the upcoming meeting, or individual responses to the issues raised.
I did not receive the email so thank you for sending it to me.
Warm regards,
Dr. Glen Barry
Is geoengineering on a large scale even viable at this time? The ideas I've heard sound almost like science fiction because their scale is so large. Who would pay to seed the oceans with hundreds of thousands of tons of iron filings? I don't think the world's governments even have the political will to raise the money to do this stuff.
Posted by: Karen | October 18, 2010 3:59 PMThe survival of our planet is an extremely complex system, constitute the Earth's climate system is an important part of the Earth system. In the long history of the earth, the climate is always changing in a constant!

January 22, 2011 EARTH MEANDERS: Ecological Internet: Being Green and Meaning It
Caring for Earth is cool; not caring, overly consuming, greenwashing, ecological ignorance, superstition and inaction are not acceptable
By Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet
Earth Meanders come from Earth's Newsdesk

The Earth?s life is some 3.5 billion years old. In a mere 300 years human super-predators have taken it upon themselves to cut and burn other life forms to make a more comfortable life. Most are blissfully unaware that they are destroying their habitat. Remedial actions are orders of magnitude inadequate, band-aids instead of open heart surgery. We will quickly halt this growing industrialization, commit to ecosystem protection and restoration, and return to the forest garden, or we will all die. Really, if we continue as we are, the biosphere and ecosystems collapse taking being with it. And it will be grisly.
I haven?t written a really good rip-snorting Earth Meanders in awhile; though this is largely what I am known for doing. I use to meander quite frequently, writing personal essays in the tradition of Montesquieu looking at ecological sustainability in relation to other social issues, showing it is all related with ecology as the unifier. Nor have I literally ruminated regarding my life and ecology like I use to, spilling my guts regarding my turmoil and depression resulting from an acute ecological and historical awareness of global ecological change. This is overdue; particularly as I recently turned 45, I am celebrating this month 20 years of using IT and the Internet for ecological conservation, and thus some personal reflection is due. Stop reading if you don?t want to be shocked by these personal meanderings?
For those just catching up and not aware of Ecological Internet and my work much yet, let me tell you my story briefly, and why I care so much for Earth, all her creatures and the human family. I write Earth Meanders mostly for my own enjoyment and to express my thoughts, and my primary and overwhelming concern is that I write what I meant to say. If so, I like it, and could really care less what others think. So just when you thought I had matured, here goes another meander, which together with the others pretty much assure I can never run for office ;-) Potential employers please consider this piece an essay demonstrating critical thinking. If deep ecology ? and free thinking and writing - are declared terrorism, I may be in trouble. Yet we all know there are no thought crimes, right?
Earth Dying
Humanity?s fate is completely one with the natural world. Our genes and cells ? like all other species? ? are part of the larger environment and ultimately the global ecological system ? Earth System or Gaia, if you will. Earth is alive and her air, water, land and ocean ecosystems self-regulate this organism like our organs do for us. The human boom of clearing natural ecosystems for ?development? ? which has only been occurring for a few hundred years, an ecological blink of an eye ? is destroying our shared ecosystem home. Unless humanity transitions to a social, political and economic state devoted to global ecological sustainability; our future is apocalyptic ecosystem collapse as Earth becomes uninhabitable.
The Earth system is being destroyed by industrial capitalism?s emphasis upon growth as the measurement of well-being. As always poor people are being given the shaft by the rich. Ecosystems are treated like candies to be gobbled. And the environment is stopping working. As ecosystems collapse, we are reaching or passing the point where carrying capacities (ability to support life) and their lag times are exceeded, and the ecological fabric of being frays to the point where the whole biosphere dies.
Perhaps some bacteria on the ocean floor continue living, and cockroaches and dandelions, but Gaia - an entirely revolutionary, complex, amazing ecological amalgam of naturally evolved life, and their patterns and processes ? is gone forever never to return. Maybe there are other Gaias, or this one can repair herself after we leave, but that is inconsequential; because as of now we only know of the one biosphere we share, it is remarkable, and we and all known life are utterly dependent.
Anyone with an iota of ecological knowledge and/or common sense can see the way we are treating Earth and her water, oceans, forests, climate and our shared biosphere is needlessly killing us all. Do some reading! Just consider with an open mind: 80% of natural primary forests gone, nearly all fisheries and most large ocean fish over-fished, abrupt climate change, water scarcity, militaristic resource grabs, surging population and over-consumption (albeit inequitable).
Some know Earth in crises and still don?t care. You are sick if you are not blown away by not yet over-developed world living conditions, the inequity, the stench, the unfairness of trade in resources to import goods, ripping off locals for trees and gold, and dumping wastes. The rich world?s beautifully coiffed yet still smelly rich elite are more concerned with maintaining enormously consumptive lifestyles that don?t give a rat?s ass about anything else. We live in times of great social inequity and injustice, and the movement for global ecological sustainability must remedy these as well, if only to ensure our own success.
Humanity Fucked if We Don?t Ecologically Transform Ourselves
EI and ecological science's grim prophesy of global ecological collapse is not without hope if we can transform our relationships with each other and Earth - but it must happen now, immediately, and with force. We must first protect all natural remaining ecosystems ? back to the land and taking to the woods and protecting and restoring natural ecosystems! Then onto ecological restoration as power still exists in seeds to recover Earth. Just enough intact core land, ocean and water ecosystems and remnants exist to reconstitute biosphere losses with ecological restoration. We can embrace energy use reduction as our mantra, and choose a steady state economy that favors all living well forever over a few plundering, causing suffering and death for all.
Together we absolutely must act now to avoid global ecology collapsing - protecting and restoring natural ecosystems. We must all grow the ecological sustainability movement, organize including leaderless protest cells, and choose our own resistance tactics for which you are solely responsible. And we must overcome the grave disserve done to global ecology by corporate NGO greenwash of ecosystem diminishing extractive industries and techno-optimists considering geoengineering rather than human beings returning to living within nature.
The same bunch of Neanderthal cretins leading the fouling of the Earth, and who have stopped action for decades, are resurgent and remain in power and are pushing this greenwash crap that doesn?t really do anything for ecology. But then again, it is not as if government under U.S. democrats, or for that matter a liberal democracy anywhere in the world, were making huge strides on climate and ecology. It is time for us all to join Earth?s team again and grow food, restore ecosystems, and be one with Gaia as you homestead with your eco-village family. I contend this is the only remaining road to global ecological sustainability and personal family/friend group survival. We can do it together.
It is well past time to go around governments and use people?s power revolutionary tactics to achieve ecological sustainability. A soft revolution that makes clear there are certain activities that are no longer ecologically tolerable, and using all means with which you personally are comfortable to resist coal, old forest logging, tar sands, population growth, industrial agriculture, fish trawling, geoengineering, fracking etc. is needed immediately. I do not recommend harder revolutionary tactics at this time because well intentioned symbolic protest would be quashed. But we must prepare.
If humanity dares to discuss geoengineering ? the apex of human hubris to think we can engineer creation ? we are certainly free to discuss insurgency and change of political structures and social norms for Earth. Radicalness in thought and action is the way forward on global ecological sustainability as decades of compromise and accommodation have clearly failed to bring about the magnitude of ecological change necessary in the time we have. Humanity needs new ecology based ways of living.
And we just need some plain talking on what is at stake here. If you are too fucking stupid to see ecology is dying then you deserve to die too. My personal inner-most thoughts are the same - if you don?t care or obstruct the ecological revolution ? you are ecocide. You can abuse your body, party, study, dream or do sports as you wish; but don?t destroy our shared ecology. Do what you like including aping incredulous superstitions you believe and that does not harm others, but it is not ok for you to take those living green lives and the entire biosphere down with you by destroying ecosystems with your over-consumption.
When you have a case like this, with one side knowledgeable and the other ignorant regarding a global planetary emergency, it is up the knowledgeable to destroy ignorance. There are so many other aspects of course. We need a planning horizon past tomorrow. There will be horrendous human and animal suffering because of the choices we make now. Will every last ecosystem be lost to get to the last resources? Shame on the U.S. for building, and then trying to hold onto, a lifestyle that is dangerous and destructive. It is time to for us all to downsize, and for others to reach a minimum standard of acceptable living. And I know it?s hard, as I grapple myself with simplifying and desiring objects.
Dr. Glen Barry and Ecological Internet
Unlikely a long haired neo-hippie intellectual like myself will be listened to outside of certain circles. I am generally not liked. Most of my family and close friends have abandoned and ostracized me, thinking I am crazy. I have been intense, driven and vain ? but much less so as have aged and gained some perspective. They are partially right as I suffer from debilitating depression as witness end of being and Earth. But we do what we can, this is about the message not the messenger, and I feel much better thank you; aside from that niggling ecological fact that Earth and being are dying needlessly assaulted by known assailants.
Imperfect as I may be, I would be willing to take up arms to defend Earth, but there are so few of us with deep ecological understanding, and as of now we would be slaughtered. But I do academically write on how well known revolutionary strategies such as leaderless resistance and an autonomous cell structure are probably the only remaining way to organize ecological protest adequate to save being. Ruling elite and capitalists are not going to give up their Earth destroying ways unless made to do so. There is a body of people?s power revolutions of the past that inform the current situation, albeit still changing with the advent of transnational Internet advocacy networks and such.
Ecological Internet is well-established, has been around in one form or another including as Forests.org for 20 yrs. - along the way inventing blogging and getting a PhD with this work as the project. If you have just found out about us now, we were one of the first 10,000 web sites in 1993 and have just been under your and many's radar, consistently putting out successful biocentric ecological advocacy. I will be writing a memoir following completion of New Earth Rising ? coming soon. But let me say at 5?6? when dripping wet, as with most things, small is beautiful. Pick a special ecological place and organize its protection and expansion.
I am the Founder, President and Chief Information officer of ?Ecological Internet?, the web's leading provider of forest conservation and environmental portals and search engines, including the Forest Conservation Portal at http://forests.org/ and Climate Ark Climate Change Portal at http://www.climateark.org/. Ecological Internet (EI) specializes in the construction of environmental portals with unique information retrieval tools and original analysis. EI's web sites are widely recognized as premier environmental news, information and analysis web sites, and enjoy wide use from around the world.
This is the 20th anniversary of my work using the Internet to carry out Internet education on forest conservation, ecology, eco-forestry and sustainability and to build a community of forest conservationists. I have virtually pioneered the use of the Internet for forest conservation, inventing blogging and ecological search engines along the way, and building a huge variety of data sets, maps, queries and displays, and business practices for identification of high-priority areas for protection and restoration.
Ecological Internet (EI) ? originally Forests.org ? was founded with a grant from the MacArthur Foundation in 1999. But the work actually began in December of 1990 as I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Papua New Guinea. There on a 1200 baud modem I watched the characters go by one at a time, putting out rainforest protection information. Later this became my Master?s Degree in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development project, and my PhD in Land Resources. Since graduating in 2003 with a PhD, I have worked full-time with Ecological Internet.
I have conceived, established and continue to run all aspects of the servers, operating systems, databases and programming for EI. I am the webmaster, network and content manager. This involves managing a dozen large, complex and joined networked databases of forest conservation and ecological sustainability data, program information retrieval and integration tools, and multi-channeled distribution networks using social media, the web and email. Daily we carry out activities like commenting upon, networking and archiving biocentric news; and much thought and efforts goes into the analysis for alerts, press releases and essays such as this one.
This work has made me internationally recognized as leader in the use of the Internet for communication that facilitates forest conservation outcomes ? possessing outstanding knowledge of sustainable development and environmental conservation science and global policy, and expert IT skills ? and has been supported and recognized as such by the MacArthur Foundation and Google Grants.
I hope very much to continue with this biocentric ecological awareness and action work forever until my time to rest comes, though lately I have out of necessity taken to applying and interviewing for a job to subsidize the work. For now I and my wife ? EI?s two key employees ? are well established and happy on our 7 acre homestead and office for Ecological Internet ? loving the tree planting and ecological restoration, and organic and permaculture gardens, even as we program Earth fighting tools on the Internet. We?ll see what happens.
I and many others love Earth enough to fight and die for being if necessary. Of course hopefully it doesn?t come to that. But when shared survival is threatened; if it must, it must. I have just completed my political ecology book first draft entitled ?New Earth Rising? regarding possible revolutionary approaches to reaching global ecological sustainability. During the last few years many meanders have shared ideas on revolutionary ecological thought, as I researched the topic for my book, but I am an academic and not a practicing revolutionary, and I do write about other things. And I do look forward to writing more on other topics including homesteading, permaculture and gardening, and doing other things like playing music, hiking and reading/thinking.
Yet frankly mine is a gloomy prophecy. I see no need to apologize; this is what I have concluded in a lifetime of study on global ecological change. Humanity is plunging into darkness with ecologically unsustainable lifestyles, aspirations and procreation that are killing the ecosystems required for life. There will be a hard turn now back to ecology or being ends. And America and clones ? land of the free but gluttonous ? are leading the way. Please plan on buying my book when published sometime this year on these topics. Happy holidays, let?s together make 2011 a key year in the history of global ecological and social sustainability, and last minute donations to raise the last $5K in donations necessary to fund Ecological Internet are deeply appreciated at http://www.ecoearth.info/shared/donate/ .
For Earth,
Dr. Glen Barry
How on Earth are we going to adequately feed the hungry and starving, and simultaneously not keep 'feeding the problem' of human overpopulation?
http://english.aljazeera.net/programmes/frostovertheworld/2011/02/2011259341259393.html
How is it possible for so many top rank experts of great stature to be adamantly advocating for more "food production to feed a growing population" and yet be failing to mention the profound implications of skyrocketing absolute global population numbers on Earth? For such a thing to be occurring in 2011 appears preposterous. It is morally outrageous and dangerous both to future human well being and environmental health, I believe, for well established experts to be reporting ubiquitously in high-level discussions such things as are directly contradicted by unchallenged scientific research of human population dynamics and human overpopulation. Is it possible that so-called, self-proclaimed experts are not aware of peer-reviewed, published research in their area of expertise that indicates the food supply is the independent (not dependent) variable and human population numbers is the dependent (not independent) variable with regard to the relationship between human population numbers and food supply? It appears that many too many experts are collectively reporting specious theory and data regarding the human population that cannot be supported by the best available scientific evidence, I believe.
The food supply is the independent variable not the dependent variable. Human population numbers is the dependent variable not the independent variable. The believers in demographic transition theory and in the idea that "we must increase food production to feed a growing population" are simply mistaken. The false promise of Demographic Transition Theory, that population stabilization will somehow occur benignly and automatically a mere four decades from now, as well as the upside down thinking that human population numbers is the independent variable and food supply is the dependent variable, are at least two of the crucial and deliberate misunderstandings that are being deployed to direct the human community down a patently unsustainable "primrose path" no human being with feet of clay would ever choose to go.
The uncontested scientific finding of the relationship between food supply and human population numbers is being obscured and denied by the very experts upon whom the human community relies for guidance and direction. Conscious obsfucation and willful denial by 'the brightest and best' of the scientific finding regarding the relationship between food supply and human population numbers has been occurring pervasively for way too long a time. This incredible failure of nerve by 'the smartest guys in the room' in my not-so-great generation has got to be acknowledged, addressed and overcome.
The children's future is being stolen by thieves of the highest order. And what is the communal response? A code of silence! Are people going to choose yet again to be bystanders at a moment when bold action, intellectual honesty and moral courage are required? Willful blindness, hysterical deafness, elective mutism and utter passivity cannot continue. The children will soon enough express their anger and disbelief at what the elders in my not-so-great generation have either failed to do or else done poorly "on our watch", while wealthy and powerful crooks in high places robbed those among us who are still young of a good enough future.
How on Earth are we going to adequately feed the hungry and starving, and simultaneously not keep 'feeding the problem' of human overpopulation? This is the question no one is asking, the one that needs to be asked.
Please speak out loudly and clearly....

Could it be that we need to make democracy, real democracy happen?
Perhaps what we need, maybe all we need, is an adequately functioning democracy, but first ordinary people will have to liberate ourselves from the pernicious, widely shared and consensually validated thinking of a tiny minority in the human community who extol the virtue of greedmongering as good, as an activity to be valued most highly.
Even an enlightened dictator is not a person in whom I could place much faith. We need for duly elected, common people who are chosen by a society to accept the responsibilities and fulfill the duties of leadership by meaningfully embracing democratic principles and eschewing greed, by not "selling out" to greedmongers.
It appears to me that the most arrogant, foolhardy and avaricious, self-proclaimed masters of the universe among us rule the world in our time, and rule it absolutely. This situation is bold evidence of a corruption of democracy, not an example of the reasonable exercise of democratic principles and practices. These circumstances are not only a colossal insult to human beings with feet of clay, but also are a clear and present danger to global biodiversity, Earth's environs, its limited resources and to a good enough future for the children.
Democracy requires representatives who reject the entreaties and bribes of greedmongers as well as embrace principles and practices that promote long-term well being of ordinary people and not only the short-term desires and fantasies of masters of the universe.

We all need to take responsibility and change our habits and respect and love the planet that gave us life and so generously supports us.

Urge Forest Stewardship Council to Stop Greenwashing Industrial Primary Forest Logging
TAKE ACTION HERE NOW!
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and its members, certifiers and suppliers must commit to ending the certification of primary forest timbers [search], falsely implying it is sustainable to log 500 year old trees for toilet paper, lawn furniture and other consumer items. Please participate in EI's on-going global campaign to end primary forest logging, and to protect and restore old forests, as keystone responses to abrupt climate change, biodiversity loss and global ecosystem collapse. Please take action to ensure FSC stops certifying primary forest logging; even as together we continue to successfully confront rapacious logging companies and their government enablers - 4 major victories in last months alone!
Statement by Dr. James E. Hansen
Freedom Plaza:
Equal Protection of the Laws
We hold this truth to be self evident ? all people are created equal. That truth is the basis for equal protection of the laws ? a right guaranteed by our Constitution. "All people" includes young people, mountain people, poor people.
Our government was instituted to protect the rights of all people. We are gathered here today to draw attention to the failure of our government to protect the rights of the people, and failure to provide equal protection of the laws. People have suffered a long train of abuses, invariably with the same objective ? to enrich the few at the expense of the many.
First, the government is failing to protect the future of young people, knowingly allowing and even subsidizing actions that benefit the few at the expense of the public and at the expense of all life sharing this Earth.
Second, the legislative and executive branches of government knowingly propose actions that demonstrably and utterly fail to preserve our climate, and the environment for life.
Third, our government allows and contributes to a great hoax, perpetrated on the public by moneyed interests, aimed at confusing the public about the reality of climate change. We are in danger of becoming the land for the rich and the home of the bribe.
More than 200 years after the founding of our nation, we face a great moral crisis. Human-made climate change pits the rich and powerful against the young and unborn, against the defenseless, and against nature. The moral issue is comparable to slavery and civil rights.
Solution for civil rights was provided by the combination of people in the streets and the courts, which provided equal protection of the laws and ordered desegregation.
Brave people have been standing up in West Virginia, in Kentucky, in Tennessee, in Utah, in Australia, in the United Kingdom, around the world.
But now is the time to go on the offensive. We should not be begging courts to forgive the brave people who protest. We must ask the courts to order the government to present plans to phase down fossil fuel emissions at a pace dictated by science, a pace stabilizing climate, preserving nature and a future for young people, providing young people equal protection of the laws.
We can bring that case. But we can win only if the public understands the situation, sees through the lies of the moneyed interests, sees what is needed to solve the problem.
As long as fossil fuels are the cheapest energy, we will not solve the addiction. There will be more mountaintop removal, longwall mining, tar sands, deep ocean drilling, shale gas, seeking the last drop in the most pristine places.
We must put a fee on carbon, collected from fossil fuel companies, with all proceeds distributed to the public. One hundred percent or fight!
Most people will get more in the monthly green check than they pay in increased energy prices. Our economy and innovations will be stimulated. We will move to clean energies.
A coalition is building for a carbon fee with 100 percent distributed to the public in a monthly check. In October this coalition will launch a campaign, Million Letter March, gathering letters showing that the people insist on an honest equitable solution. Please join the March.
Let us resolve to have a rebirth ? a rebirth of our nation, a rebirth of equality of opportunity, true equality -- with a government of the people, by the people and for the people ? all of the people.

Stop UK Government's Grand Forest Sell-off, Urge Protection and Restoration for the People's Old Forests
TAKE ACTION HERE NOW!
The UK government plans to put half of England's state-owned forests up for sale to private firms to raise billions to reduce the budget deficit and as a give-away to the nascent biomass industry. Ancient woodlands [search], regenerating natural forests and planted trees all provide important ecosystems and could be chopped down to make way for holiday villages, golf courses and commercial logging. This is theft of the English cultural heritage with woodlands and natural landscapes. Instead the UK government should fully protect many of these woodlands, fund forest ecological restoration and native plantation establishment, and strive in haste to get to 25% forest cover and beyond for their own ecological sustainability.

The main theft to the country is that no trees having been replanted for years. What will be left in a few years when all forests will be gone.
Posted by: Bruce | November 18, 2010 2:15 AMRestoring Our Ancient Roots
?Just doing the right thing?
Who are we to tell countries to save the rain forests when our ancestors cut down over 80% of all ancient forest and replaced it with farmland, cities and industrial areas?
Ancient forest also termed as old-growth forest, primary forest, ancient forest, virgin forest, primeval forest & frontier forest takes hundreds of years grow. Most were felled between the 17th Century and 1980.
The greatest legacy we can leave our grand children?s children is to restore these ancient forests across Europe, North America, Canada, United States, Central America, South America, Africa & Australasia.
There was a time when the human legacy was one of what we can build, what we can make & what we can invent. That time is over the only human legacy we can leave is what we can restore.
Why restore?
If we don?t restore after the rain forests are gone the great pine forests will be in great demand and value & it will only be a matter of time before they will suffer the same fate as the rain forest. Then there will be no great forests to save.
To protect the legacy we have to take responsibility for it, this can only be done in countries which have stable government, in countries who have laws which stand the test of time, this can only happen in developed countries who have already destroyed the ancient forests.
How do we restore?
Purchase land where ancient forests can be restored. Manage the start process of the restoration as we are only the starting generation we will never see the full result of our efforts. It is our responsibility to make sure the structures are in place and no one can destroy the legacy after we are gone.
The Legacy
We do this as we know it is the right thing to do. As a generation we only have two legacies? we could leave, the first is to be the generation that consumed knowing we are taking our grand children?s children right to breath fresh air away from them forever or we are the generation that took responsibility to make sure our grand children?s children inherited the right to be able to always be able to breathe fresh air.
What do we need?
We need the greatest minds on forest management, the greatest legal minds, the greatest endorsements & a generation who wants to take responsibility for doing the right thing.
We aim to raise $400 million in our first year this will enable us to have a trail in every country and set up the forest management and legal security structure needed before we restore our lasting and most important human legacy in recorded history.
I'm just one person with little money, What can I do? The sale and ultimate destruction of our native forests means we will lose such a huge section of our biodiversity, and we lose our lungs, our heritage! We are so lucky to have the beautiful environment we live in, and due to "our" government messing up once again, they want to recoup by selling OUR woodland habitats! So, I only have the power of word of mouth, what can I do to help prevent the government destroying our spectacular forests??
Posted by: Vicky Redfern | November 28, 2010 11:17 AMThis seems like a real shame. On one hand, economic recessions are good for the environment because they encourage people to conserve energy, but then governments go and do something like this. It seems very shortsighted to me.
Posted by: Karen | November 29, 2010 8:52 PMThis doesn't benefit anyone. We should protect our woodlands and natural landscapes because they are major providers of goods and services.

EI PRESS/SOCIAL MEDIA RELEASE
Wisconsin Graduate and Green Area Resident Dr. Glen Barry Honored to be Named ?Utne Reader Visionary? for Political Ecology Work on Internet
- The respected publication ?Utne Reader? rightly terms Dr. Barry an ?Eco-Rabble Rouser? as list as one of ?25 Visionaries Who Are Changing Your World?
January 15, 2011
From Earth's Newsdesk, project of Ecological Internet (EI)
http://www.ecoearth.info/newsdesk/
(Denmark, WI) ? The ?Utne Reader? has selected noted ecological commentator and activist Dr. Glen Barry as one of 25 leading visionaries in their November-December 2010 issue. [1] In the blurb accompanying the listing, it terms Dr. Barry an ?Eco-Rabble Rouser? who was selected as an ?Utne Reader visionary? because as ?[a]n early political blogger, Barry has built a massive network for ecological change. His ?global grassroots advocacy? adds muscle to local environmental fights all over the planet, and when mainstream green groups fall short, he speaks up.? [2]
Ecological Internet (EI), which Dr. Barry heads and runs, has just learned of the honor and is only now providing comment. ?I am gratified and humbled to have my life?s work on behalf of ecology be noted by such a respected journal as the Utne Reader. I believe strongly that global ecosystems are collapsing, threatening ecological sustainability of all life. It is time that biocentric ecological thought be given more media coverage in its own right, and hopefully this will help do so,? says Dr. Barry responding to the award.
Dr. Barry is an ecological sustainability activist, writer and technologist based in rural Wisconsin ? yet practicing ?grassroots global ecology activism? via the Internet from an old log cabin surrounded by gardens and forest restoration. [3] He is a 1984 graduate of Denmark High School, Wisconsin; graduated from Marquette University with a ?Political Science? BA, and has a Masters degree in ?Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development? and a PhD in ?Land Resources? from the University of Wisconsin ? Madison.
?I am very pleased to be raised, educated, living and working in Wisconsin, which with deep connections to Aldo Leopold, John Muir and others, provide a huge school of ecological thought that has consistently pioneered our understanding of how to live with the natural world. Wisconsin has a deep responsibility to protect and restore its own forests, water climate and land or face continued ecological and economic decline. The movement for global ecological sustainability here in Wisconsin and globally is growing and becoming more formidable.?

Posted by: S Moker | January 20, 2011 3:56 PMKeep going, Glen. Great effort.
What would think of acknowledging the science of human population dynamics and human overpopulation as a way of beginning to take a new path toward sustainability? If we keep repeating the mistakes made in the past by denying extant and unchallenged science, nothing can happen. Without an acknowledgement of the root cause(s) of what is ailing the human family, how are we to move forward to raise awareness of the global predicament? Once awareness is raised among a critical mass of people, it becomes possible to organize for the purpose of formulating policies and programs of action.
The willful denial of science has kept us and continues to keep us from gaining momentum needed to address and overcome the human-driven challenges that currently threaten human wellbeing and environmental health.
Sincerely,
Steve

March 7, 2011 EARTH MEANDERS: Long Live the Cheddar Rebellion, We Are All Wisconsinites Now
On Wisconsin, forward, sift, winnow for freedom, worker and ecology rights
By Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet
Earth Meanders come from Earth's Newsdesk
Global people's power rebellions sweeping Middle East and American states are our last best chance for shared abundance on a finite Earth. We are one human family with natural human rights to freedom, worker rights, ecological sustainability, equity, knowledge, truth and justice. This essay calls for continued protest, more civil disobedience and a general strike if necessary to achieve these ideals in Madison and the world.
In the late winter/very early spring of Cheesehead discontent, the Cheddar Rebellion in Wisconsin is resisting a corporate take-over of the state by the neo-Fascist wing of the GOP teabagger nuthouse. The new tyrannical Governor ? Scott Walker ? is bent upon stripping teachers and other public workers of their collective bargaining rights; pushing through massive tax breaks for corporations and the rich at the expense of education, unions, workers and the poor; and deregulating environmental protections while selling the state to corporate interests. I don't believe in Scott Walker's god or family values yet he sure as hell is ramming them down my/our throats. He and his ilk continually vilify teachers, firefighters and cops as slobs and thugs.
Darth Walker?s power grab manipulates a manageable budget shortfall as an excuse to take away state employees? collective bargaining rights and imposing an authoritarian worldview upon Wisconsin. Collective bargaining is the established human right of workers to freely associate with others, to organize and negotiate, to sell their labor. People own their bodies, their hands, their minds and their work; and they have a RIGHT to collectively organize for their interests and for maximal benefits. It is only due to the grace of 14 fabulous state Senate Democrats having gone into exile, and hundreds of thousands of protest participants, that Wisconsin remains free for now.
AMERICAN FASCISM
Scott Walker?s government represents the full blossoming of the tea party into American fascism. The conservative ruling elite botched 911, wars, climate change and the economy; now they want to break the middle and lower classes, destroy ecology for more inequitable consumption, and gut freedoms to hide and pay for their failures. The protests have exposed close ties between Scott Walker and David and Charles Koch, the billionaire brothers who helped bankroll the Tea Party movement. The Kochs wrote a million-dollar check to the Republican Governors Association; and Koch Industries, through its PAC, donated $43,000 to Mr. Walker's campaign, his second largest donor.
I absolutely never thought I would live to see fascism in Wisconsin ? my homeland ? or a more elegant, spontaneous, civil and uniquely Wisconsin citizens? response. For going on four weeks, up to 125,000 Wisconsin citizens have daily occupied and protested at their capitol for workers rights, against regressive budget cuts, and to resist fascist tyranny. These entirely peaceful, respectful and even polite protests have been met with widening restrictions upon civil liberties including freedom of speech and assembly. If the tea party had protests of this magnitude, they would have dissolved into violence weeks ago. The Cheddar Rebellion has thus far been, and shows every indication of remaining, a textbook example of peaceful people power protest.
Yet, under Dictator Walker, Wisconsin?s previously open and accessible capitol ? the ?people?s house? ? is now barricaded with intense searches just to enter and spontaneous protests are no longer welcome. For over a week Walker has been in contempt of court for failing to fully open the capitol, and most recently for not returning it to the pre-protest access policies. In contrast, protestors recently ended their continuous 18 day occupation of the capitol? with hundreds sleeping overnight on the cold marble ? based upon the same court order.
With our NGO Ecological Internet (EI) and me being based in Wisconsin, I have some personal insights into the situation. I knew Scott Walker well in college as a friendly adversary. He lied, was dumb and was not liked then too, losing the University student body?s Presidential election to a write-in candidate, cheated and lied, and never graduated. He was as plastic, superstitious, dangerous and self-absorbed then as he is now. Walker is a demagogue, who played upon the worst in people to get elected Governor. Wisconsin is more openly racist, intolerant, unfair, repressive and potentially explosive than ever before thanks to the Koch/teabagger/Walker fascist corporate take-over.
America and the world know more about what is going on in Libya than in Madison. I have traveled some distance down-state to Madison three times in recent weeks to protest; and it is the smartest, most polite crowd of people I have ever seen. Police largely support the protestors and there has been minimal conflict. This revolution is being tweeted, but not televised, as it is clear the corporate media could give a damn about massive protests in America for social justice. Fox ?News? even went as far as broadcasting footage of violent protestors with palm trees in the background, clearly impossible in a Wisconsin winter.
IT'S THE INEQUITY DURING TIMES OF GLOBAL ECOSYSTEM COLLAPSE STUPID!
Across the board humanity is at risk of losing the fruits of hard fought battles for human advancement. Over the past 300 years progressive and liberal thought and action have largely ended monarchy, slavery, and achieved equality, human rights and voting rights for much of the world. We have gained knowledge regarding ecology and our place in the world?s web of life, and fully understand Earth and humanity are threatened by global ecosystem collapse. Globally we are all witnessing political and social implications of collapsing ecosystems, resource scarcity and economic inequities.
In the United States some 400 individuals possess more wealth than the 155 million Americans in the bottom half. Globally 2.5 billion people live on less than $2 day; 800 million do not have enough food, and the same number lack clean water. The challenge of our generation is to stop Earth?s biosphere from collapsing, making our home uninhabitable; while maximizing human freedom, fairness and dignity. It is pure evil that so few have so much, while so many suffer daily, failing to meet basic needs.
A NEW GLOBAL DREAM
The American dream is a myth built upon once-off economic growth destroying global ecosystems and unfairly sharing the ill-gotten proceeds. A new global dream is emerging from world protests. We are one human family with natural human rights to freedom, workers rights, ecological sustainability, equity, knowledge and justice. Humans have a right to associate with whomever they wish, and a right to cooperate in negotiations. We all also have the duty to protect our habitat, and to protect and restore shared ecology at all costs. And like all peoples, we have the right to change our government when it becomes abusive.
Governor Walker has lost the people's respect and is unfit to lead. Darth Walkers?s illegal power grabs must be resisted fully now or we can look forward to a more unfair, poor, illiterate, stupid and superstitious America. Everyone has compromised but Scott Walker. What part of "court order" does this dolt not understand? The villain must drop the regressive budget and elimination of collective bargaining, and he must fully open the capitol to its people NOW! Failure to do so means he must resign, be recalled or impeached, and/or imprisoned. EI calls upon on all Cheeseheads to continue shunning Scott Walker and to further resist his fascist government.
Global people?s power protest sweeping the globe is humanity?s last best chance for survival during a planetary ecological and social emergency. And what has occurred already is truly global, as witnessed by people from Egypt ordering pizzas for Wisconsin protestors to show solidarity! Thank Gaia free speech remains alive and well, for now, in America and Wisconsin. NOTHING will be gained for workers, the United States or the world if we place limits upon our freedom and rights. Let's start valuing brain power too. It is cool to be smart, and to have been taught by Wisconsin teachers to sift and winnow to find the truth on fundamental matters of such importance.
EI?s global network and ecologists stands with workers in Wisconsin. We call upon all Wisconsinites and concerned affinity protestors to descend on the capitol and defend their rights. And that all peoples living under tyranny, or not having basic rights or needs met, rise up now ? coming next to Saudi Arabia and China. Both Ecological Internet and our New Earth Rising project will honor and support Wisconsin labor?s calls for a General Strike if or when they are made. And we are willing to participate in active civil disobedience to stop the fascist budget and rollback of rights, and are committed to not letting the protests become violent, playing into the fascists? desire.
We hope this commitment to a New Earth Rising is shared by the World, that people?s rebellions spread like wildfire nationally and globally, and that the whole human family participates and benefits. There is one positive thing that has arisen from all this mess. As noted on the #wiunion twitter feed, many of us have fallen more deeply in love with Wisconsin than we ever thought possible. There will be no backing down or the ruling elite and corporate fascists win. As Nelson Mandela noted, "It always seems impossible until it's done." On Wisconsin.

Vedanta's controversial bauxite mine on the Dongria Kondh?s tribal land has been stopped, after four years of protests by local peoples supported by Survival International and a wide range of affinity campaigns, including most recently by EI?s Earth Action Network.
By Earth's Newsdesk, a project of Ecological Internet (EI)
CONTACT: Dr. Glen Barry, glenbarry@ecologicalinternet.org

Controversial plans to develop a bauxite mine on sacred tribal land in India [search] have been cancelled by India's environment ministry. The Dongria Kondh?s ? an indigenous tribe who have lived since time immemorial around the mountain Niyamgiri in the Indian state of Orissa ? demands have been met, and the area will remain wild, lush and sacred. Multi-national company Vedanta?s existing aluminum refinery in the area had polluted local rivers, damaged crops and disrupted the lives of the local tribe; and will now not be able to expand six-fold. This is a Dongria Kondh victory first and foremost.
The project has been delayed by four years because of the Dongria Kondh?s intense opposition locally ? including the brandishing of bows and arrows ? as well as from environmental and tribal rights group. Globally, a loosely coordinated campaign sought to persuade multi-national Vedanta's shareholders and financiers to distance themselves from the company. This is their magnificent victory as well ? for Survival International and Amnesty International, various celebrity activists such as Bianca Jagger and Michael Palin, and numerous other loosely affiliated affinity campaigns, including most recently from Ecological Internet working with the Rainforest Information Centre.
?Yet again global people power has come to the aid of small, intact communities battling the ecosystem destroying economic growth machine. The Dongria Kondh?s amazing efforts should be placed in the context of a global people?s power movement to protect and restore ecosystems, and wrest control of land from industrial and speculative capitalism,? asserts Dr. Glen Barry, Ecological Internet?s President.
?We are pleased to have contributed EI?s Earth Action Network?s [1] support ? some 200,000 protest emails sent from nearly 100 countries [2] in a matter of weeks. I do not think it accidental that victory was achieved immediately after me and EI?s network, with John Seed and the Rainforest Information Centre, launched our protests. We got exactly what we wanted from this timely, well-organized and locally coordinated cyber protest ? Ecological Internet?s specialty!?
### MORE ###
The project had been thrown into doubt last week when a government inquiry said that mining would destroy the way of life of the area's "endangered" and "primitive" people. The four-person committee also accused a local subsidiary of Vedanta of violating forest conservation and environment protection regulations. Because Niyamgiri Mountain is an important spiritual place, it had not thus far suffered the deforestation and degradation experienced by similar areas in India but contains an elephant reserve with Sambar, Leopard, Tiger, Barking Deer, various species of birds and other endangered species of wildlife. With the announcement, the area is free (for now) from the planned Vedenta bauxite mine.
Jairam Ramesh, India?s minister for environment and forests, said today that the government will issue what is termed a show-cause notice and take action against Vedanta. The news sent Vedanta?s shares down almost 6%, wiping almost ?300m off the value of the business. "There are very serious violations of environment act and forest right act," Ramesh told Bloomberg. "There is no emotion, no politics, no prejudice in the decision. It is purely based on a legal approach." Vedanta, which can appeal against the decision, had wanted to expand its existing refinery in the area, generating a six-fold increase in capacity.
Survival campaigner Dr Jo Woodman said: "This is a victory nobody would have believed possible. The Dongria's campaign became a litmus test of whether a small, marginalised tribe could stand up to a massive multinational company with an army of lobbyists and PR firms and the ear of government?. Incredibly, the Dongria's courage and tenacity, allied with the support of many people in India, and Survival's supporters around the world, have triumphed."
This is the second time Ecological Internet?s Earth Action Network has recently achieved major conservation successes in India. Last year, also working with John Seed and the Rainforest Information Centre, Ecological Internet was able to single-handedly achieve major Asian elephant migration corridor protections [3].

This is wonderful news!!! Thanks for all the great work you do.
I can only imagine how relieved and happy the Dongria people must be today.
That movie you made of them was so beautiful and heartbreaking. Great job.
Wish I had some money to send you but I'm pretty broke right now. Will help out when times change.

Bloody Brilliant. Well Done !!
Posted by: Roger | August 24, 2010 11:11 AMI and my company eSutras Organics would love to know how we can associate ourselves with the Kondhs to help sustain them. Any information will be gratefully received. This is real Big News - that sustains hope and nourishes confidence in people who care about all life on our earth.
Many times we as individuals may feel powerless, but then along comes moments like this where our collective power shows change can be made! Thank you very much everybody at Earth Action.
I applaud Minister Ramesh's decision and I hope that the Indian government's decision reflects a growing awareness and concern for tribal people across the country. The critical questions of development, displacement, and livelihood, have not been at the heart of the policies implemented by many of the Indian states. The Kondh are just one of the many tribes that have fallen victim to the so-called 'development' promoted by multinational corporations in India.
Historically development has been defined in relation to the western world's perception of progress, based on the Western model of economic growth fueled by mass industrialization. This model of development has been implemented throughout the world. Rather than improving the living standards of the majority of people, it has instead led to an expansion in social inequalities, and the concentration wealth in the hands of a few.
For the past two years I have been supporting the Kondh's battle to save
their livelihood, under the auspices of the Bianca Jagger Human Rights
Foundation (BJHRF). Last April I visited the Kondh in Orissa India. I was
very moved by their commitment and their unflinching determination to
remain in Niyamgiri Mountain. Kuleska Patru one of the leaders of the
Dongria Kondh told me, "We will not leave Niyamgiri. Without our mountain,
our god, there is no life for us; we will resist the forced expulsion till
death. Just as a fish cannot survive outside of water, the Kondh cannot
survive without Niyamgiri."
During that period I have lobby Government officials in India, spearheaded
a letter campaign to chief Minister of Orissa Naveen Patnaik, attended
and spoken at two shareholders meetings in London, delivered an Amnesty
International petition letter signed by over 30,000 people to chairman
Anil Agarwal at the last AGM and written several articles in the UK and US
media about their plight.
I would be grateful if you could post the links where you can find the

Congratulations to the Dongria tribe who protested for their rights and also to the EI for the tireless effort.I am reminded of the saying, "people are like thread; they are stronger when they come together." Together we can struggle for everybody's survival.

God bless Jairam Ramesh
Friends, great news: following the 3000 emails which you sent to Jairam Ramesh, news is in to-day that Vedanta?s controversial bauxite mine on Dongria Kondh tribal land at Niyamgiri in India has been stopped. You can see the story in The Guardian or the Ministry of Environment and Forests decision itself on the ministry website.
Furthermore, Ramesh has been quoted as saying that Vedanta had committed " very serious violations of environment act and forest right act," and that his department was looking at taking punitive action against the company. The news sent Vedanta shares down 6%.
Thanks so much for your help in creating the conditions which allowed this tremendous decision. Vedanta can still appeal so the story isn?t necessarily over yet, but this would be a good time if you wish to send a short email in your own words congratulating Ramesh - envisect@nic.in

Your Excellency,
Please pass on my congratulations to your government for its recent decision to block Vedanta Resources' controversial plan to mine bauxite on the sacred hills of the Dongria Kondh tribe.??
?Environment Minister Mr. Jairam Ramesh has stated that Vedanta has shown a "shocking and blatant disregard for the rights of the tribal groups", and the Minister has also questioned the legality of the massive refinery Vedanta has already built below the hills. His decision to block the mine was obviously the right thing to do, and I would hope that a similarly enlightened decision will be made about the refinery itself.
Given the rising power and influence of India in the world, it is heartening to see your government displaying the kind of just and ethical leadership these troubled and divisive times so desperately need.
Yours sincerely,
